Ordinary Encounters That Change Lives

Introduction:
Today we’re going to talk about encounters. About something we do every day and usually don’t even pay much attention to. We run into someone on the street, say hello to a neighbor, exchange a few words with a sales clerk at the store, or bump into an acquaintance we haven’t seen in a long time. At home, we sit down at the table with our family and ask, “How’s it going?”

These are ordinary moments. And yet, it is precisely these moments that make up our lives. Some people just pass through them. Others stay for years. And some manage to influence us without us even noticing it at the time.

So today, let’s talk about ordinary encounters. And about how there can be much more to them than meets the eye.

Conversation:
We live in a world where we’re constantly connected. We have phones, social media, video calls, messages, and countless other ways to communicate. We know what’s happening on the other side of the world; we can message someone hundreds of kilometers away in a matter of seconds.

And yet, it happens that a person walks right past us and we don’t even notice them. We meet dozens of people, and they remain nothing more than anonymous faces to us. Yet it takes so little to turn an anonymous stranger into someone close to us, even for a moment.

A greeting. A smile. A quick question. Or perhaps just holding the door open and a simple “thank you.”

These are small things. But they are precisely what create an environment in which we feel good.

Think, for example, of a time when we walked into a store and the person behind the counter smiled at us. Nothing extraordinary happened. Yet we left in a better mood than before.

And it works the other way around, too. Sometimes all it takes is a rude remark, indifference, or rejection, and suddenly the whole day feels a little harder.

People simply have a powerful influence on one another. And often much more than we realize.
The important thing is to try to influence the people and the world around us positively! And that is precisely the magic of human encounters. We don’t always have to know what our words, gestures, or smiles will do for another person. Goodness often continues on its own, without us seeing where it leads.

These are the brief, ordinary encounters with people we don’t know. Just as important, however, are the encounters with those we know all too well—with our spouse, with our children, with our parents, with our siblings. With friends we’ve known for decades. It’s precisely here that we may stop noticing just how precious some things are.

A morning greeting. Coffee together. Asking how we slept. A quick phone call. Laughter around the table.

We take these moments for granted. It’s only when something changes that we realize what a great gift they were. That’s why it’s worth paying attention to them right now. To truly notice the person sitting across from us.
Not just their words, but also their mood, their smile, their gaze, or their silence. After all, that’s what turns mere time spent together into a real encounter.

In his famous story about Mowgli, Rudyard Kipling includes a simple sentence: “We are of the same blood, you and I.” There is something very human about it. He isn’t saying that we’re all the same. We aren’t. We have different opinions, experiences, personalities, worries, and joys. But beneath it all, we’re somehow close.

We all want to be accepted. We all need encouragement sometimes. We all have moments when things are going well for us, and moments when we need someone to notice us.
And that is precisely why human closeness has such power.

We don’t have to change the world. Sometimes it’s enough to change just one small moment for the person we happen to meet.

And the spiritual dimension of an ordinary encounter often lies in our ability to see in the other person someone who is not just a passerby, a customer, a neighbor, or a colleague. They are a human being.

All you have to do is look. A world full of genuine encounters is, after all, very human. And that’s exactly the kind of world worth creating.

In conclusion:
Dear listeners, try doing one simple thing today.
The next time you meet someone you usually just pass by, really look at them. Say hello. Smile. Ask how they’re doing.

And at home, try to notice something you’ve long taken for granted. The person who is right beside you every day. Their voice, their smile, the way they laugh, or the way they hand you a cup of coffee. Because even an ordinary moment can be a gift.

And perhaps the next time you visit us here in Vranov, you’ll notice that it’s not just about the beautiful setting, the monastery, and the surrounding countryside. It’s above all about the people, their encounters, their conversations, and the time spent together.

So let’s not be afraid to get a little closer to one another.

Let’s pause for a moment to be with another person. Let’s greet each other and smile at one another.

Let’s make an ordinary day a little more beautiful.
